Our Mission:
The Hamakua Youth Foundation is a community-based organization dedicated to
creating no-fee, nurturing youth services programs for ages ten through eighteen
during non-school hours, engaging youth in environmental stewardship, providing
Hawaiian culture and arts education, developing youth leadership, and connecting
youth and their families with local social service agencies.
The Hamakua Youth Center offers a sense of place, belonging, and support to our
youth. Our Center is conveniently located directly across from Honokaa High,
Intermediate and Elementary Schools and just a few doors down from the Honokaa
Public Library. After school, on weekends and during school intercessions, youth
access our no-fee drop-in center to spend time with our supportive staff and to
socialize with their friends.
Healthy meals prepared by staff and youth as one of our life skills projects,
and homework lab with access to computers and tutors, are both offered daily.
The Hamakua Youth Center collects food donations from local farmers and ranchers
and distributes beef, vegetables, fruit and surplus food to low income families
during our monthly
family food days. In addition, we hosted many exciting
projects including the Comic Book Project, Youth Music Exchange, Malama Aina
Projects, Makahiki, and a Multimedia art program.
Hamakua Youth Center is a place where youth can gather, meet their friends and
mentors, eat meals and relax. In this supportive environment staffed by caring
adults, youth can open up and share their needs and worries. Within these day to
day relationships, youth are connected to care-givers that can observe and work
with them on issues such as self-esteem, anger management, social skills, and
motivation to assist them in finding their way in the world.
